Columbia Valley Rural Fire and Rescue Services firefighters from Fairmont Hot Springs, Windermere and Invermere Fire Rescue members assisted the Canal Flats Fire Department today (Feb. 10) after a large fire in the old planer mill at the former Canal Flats mill site.

Canal Flats firefighters with support of firefighters, trucks and equipment from Fairmont Fire Department, Windermere Fire and Invermere were able to contain the fire to the old planer mill.

While the fire is now under control, it will take several days to fully extinguish it and crews will remain on scene deal with hot spots, firefighters reported.
