Valley veteran raising funds for food bank

The Columbia Valley Food Bank is pleased to announce its newest donation drive.

Local 101-year old RCAF veteran Jim Ashworth has committed to walking 101 blocks to raise money for the food bank.

He was inspired by two slightly older Burma Star (for service in the Burma campaign during the Second World War) recipients who have started campaigns in London, England and Victoria.

Born in Cranbrook in 1919, Jim enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in January 1941 and was eventually posted to Southeast Asia with RAF No. 20 Squadron, flying over 50 missions in his Hawker Hurricane, a single-seat fighter aircraft. He retired from the Canadian military in 1966 and settled in Fairmont Hot Springs.

Jim plans to walk up to four blocks a day, with his route often taking in Columbia Gardens.
