A big week for Martial Arts Family Centre
This weekend and the up coming week are very important for local gym, Rocky Mountain Martial Arts Family Centre.
Two fighters are testing their skills in amateur Muay Thai competition on a national and world level. This is quite a big accomplishment for a small town gym with a small stable of fighters.
First Tyson Hirscher will jump in the ring in and defend his last year’s title by fighting in the Muay Thai Canada national competition.
Last year Tyson (pictured right) was a gold medal in nationals and has jumped up a class and is aiming for gold in the B class division this year. Tyson is no stranger to full contact fighting and has been making a name for himself in Alberta and Ontario as a very tough fighter. This year’s nationals will be held at the Unionville, Ontario Markham Pan Am Centre. This event and events like this are very important because Muay Thai is making head way into becoming an Olympic sport.
Hircher has worked very hard to prepare for this and is well on his way to becoming a local celebrity with his efforts in Muay Thai competition. In December Tyson will once again throw down on a fight card in Airdrie, Alberta.
Jared Spurr (pictured above), another RMMAFC fighter is flying across the globe as part of the WKU (World Kickboxing and Karate Union) Canadian national team. The competition runs from October 27 to October 30. Jared made team Canada earlier this year in trials in Calgary during national trials. He will fly out this weekend and face some of the best in the sport of Kickboxing and Muay Thai the world has to offer.
While these young men are travelling and fighting this weekend three other Cranbrook fighters from RMMAFC will be fighting in a continuous tournament at Smandych Muay Thai in Calgary. Lonni Edwards, Leyton Davis and Carter Nicholas will be looking to bring hardware back from Calgary for their community, their gym and their own sense of accomplishment.
Coach Joel Huncar is very proud of all these fighters and would like to thank Mike Honeyman from Honeyman Morris for helping these fighters get to their destinations and Lora Curran for donating her amazing paintings to help these fighters with their expenses.
No fighter trains in a vacuum; so Coach Huncar would also like to thank all the excellent sparring partners, supportive friends and families and the amazing parental support RMMAFC gets from this community.
