Bowen Byram reassigned to Vancouver
The Vancouver Giants and team fans are ecstatic.
Cranbrook’s Bowen Byram maybe not so much.
Byram was this morning reassigned by the Colorado Avalanche to the Western Hockey League’s Giants.
The 18-year-old defenseman was selected by the Avalanche with the fourth overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft. Over four pre season games with the Avs he was minus-4 with three shots on goal.
Last season, Byram’s second full tour in the WHL, he compiled 71 points (26 goals, 45 assists) and a plus-33 rating in 67 games. He then posted a jaw-dropping eight goals and 18 assists in 22 playoff games, leading the Giants to the WHL finals.
Elite Prospects describes Byram as “an exceptionally gifted defenceman who knows his strengths and plays by them. He possesses elite skating ability and is at his best when playing high energy, up-tempo hockey. He handles the puck well and is able to keep control of it under pressure. He makes calculated decisions that consistently shift momentum in his team’s favour. His creativity in the offensive zone speaks to his confidence in his ability to be a game-changer.”
It is likely Byram’s season with the Giants will be interrupted as he should be a lock for Canada’s 2020 World Junior Championship squad.
Dylan Cozens assigned to junior team
Another bonus for Hockey Canada and the WHL comes today in the form of skilled centre Dylan Cozens being reassigned by the Buffalo Sabres to the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
Cozens was the seventh overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft.
