Bowen Byram signs with NHL’s Avalanche
The Colorado Avalanche announced this morning that Cranbrook resident Bowen Byram has signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the National Hockey League club based out of Denver.
The Avalanche selected Byram with the fourth overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft on June 21 in Vancouver.
Byram, 18, led all Western Hockey League defensemen in goals and ranked third in points, earning WHL (West) First All-Star Team honours in 2018-19 with the Vancouver Giants. He scored 26 goals from the back end along with 45 assists in 67 regular-season games.
He led the Giants on a strong grind through the post season, adding eight goals and 18 assists in 22 playoff games, becoming the first defenseman to ever lead the WHL in postseason scoring.
Byram also represented Canada at the 2018 IIHF U18 World Championship in Russia, recording one assist in five games. He helped Canada win the 2018 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, scoring a goal and three assists in five games.
He concluded June in Fort Collins, taking part in the Avalanche’s prospects development camp.
Being drafted by the NHL’s highest elevation market suited Byram just fine, he told NHL.com. “It was pretty crazy seeing Joe (Sakic) call my name on stage. Cranbrook is kind of similar to Colorado so all my dad’s buddies and my friends and whatnot were pretty pumped for me to go to a place with mountains.”
Financial terms of Byram’s entry level deal were not disclosed.
