The Cranbrook Hub for Refugees (CHR) is holding a fundraiser dinner and dance at Colombo Lodge March 11, to sponsor another refugee family in Cranbrook.

The family-friendly event features Colombo’s famous spaghetti dinner, live musical entertainment, dancing, a 50/50 draw and a silent auction. CHR successfully settled a family of five in the summer of 2016 (pictured) and is now committed to supporting a second family. This time, members of the Kootenays Care for Refugees (KCR) organization will be joining them.

CHR has some money in the bank already. “We have a good start but we need more funds to support another family for a year,” said CHR Chair, Bonnie Spence-Vinge. The committee is very grateful for the generous silent auction contributions by both businesses and individuals.

The fun starts at 6 p.m. Tickets are $35 per adult, $12 for children ages six – 12, and children five and under are free. Tickets are available at Lotus Books and from CHR members.

The Fisher Peak Performing Artists Society (FPPAS) is collaborating with CHR on this event. The main act is James Neve’s dance band ‘The Choice.’ Neve, a well-known singer/songwriter says people are usually more generous when they know the fun they’re having is going to support a good cause.

“It’s really about the community coming together and improving our quality of life,” he said.

For those who love to dance or may just want to try a new step, Clare and Gerry of Dance with me Cranbrook and Randy and Kim of Cranbrook Dance Connection will each demo and teach a dance – a barn dance and a single step jive are likely!

In addition to bidding on items in the silent auction, participants will be able to donate directly to the refugee project by writing cheques payable to Cranbrook Hub for Refugees. Charitable tax receipts will be issued for all donations made this way.
