As the return of spring weather approaches, many more pet owners will be out exploring our community and often frequenting many sports fields and recreation areas to let their dogs run.

It is important to remind all pet owners of important changes made to the City of Cranbrook’s Animal Control Bylaw, approved by council back in November 2019.

The bylaw changes are designed to help reduce the amount of excrement on sports fields and playing surfaces, and athletic courts including all baseball diamonds and soccer fields. These changes also include all wading pools, water parks and splash pads, playground equipment including fall areas.

“These updated regulations reflect standard practices in many municipalities and will help us to ensure our kids don’t step in unwelcome surprises when they are enjoying our recreation facilities,” says Chris New, Director of Community Services. “The city is continuing to expand our dog friendly options which will include a new off leash area at Moir Park in 2020.”

Another important addition to the prohibited areas includes several ecologically sensitive habitats including Elizabeth Lake and specific areas within riparian areas at Idlewild Lake. These will be general in nature and notices will be posted at these areas as required.

All other areas within the city are approved for your dog to be provided they remain on-leash, except for the Muriel Baxter Off-Leash Dog Park.

Fines are in place of $100 per incident for not keeping your dog out of prohibited areas. Review the full Animal Control Bylaw.
