College hosting acclaimed guitarist

College of the Rockies is pleased to be hosting acclaimed guitarist, teacher, adjudicator, clinician and lecturer Dr. Brad Mahon on Thursday, October 6 at 8 p.m.

Dr. Mahon will offer a lecture-recital entitled From Gut to Steel: a 200-Year Hodgepodge of Fingerstyle Guitar. He will present and perform on various guitar traditions, starting with 19th Century music played on gut strings, modern classical repertoire on nylon strings and finally, a collection of steel string pieces from blues to fingerstyle.

A prizewinner at the Pacific Northwest Guitar competition, Dr. Mahon has performed in Portugal, the United States, and across Canada. He is a frequent collaborative artist, appearing in concert with the Diaz Trio, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra, the Calgary Civic Symphony and the JUNO award-winning Land’s End Chamber Ensemble.

bradmahonDr. Mahon is currently manager of the Visual and Performing Arts at the Medicine Hat College Conservatory. Formerly, he was the Head of the Conservatory of Performing Arts at the University of Regina and continues to maintain his long-standing affiliations with the Mount Royal University Conservatory in Calgary and the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.

The lecture-recital will be held in room 250 at College of the Rockies’ main campus. Dr. Mahon’s presentation is sponsored by College of the Rockies’ Guest Lecture Fund and the College of the Rockies Faculty Association.

“I was delighted when Brad agreed to visit College of the Rockies,” says faculty member, Dr. Jim Bailey. “Brad is in demand as a soloist and chamber musician and also often appears with orchestras. With his vast repertoire, his presentation will have something for everyone.”
