College installs electric vehicle charging station
Move reaffirms College of the Rockies’ commitment to sustainability
Sustainability and reducing greenhouse gas emissions are important goals for our communities. To further this initiative locally, College of the Rockies has installed a new two-vehicle electric vehicle charging station.
According to a 2019 Clean Energy Canada survey, 64% of Canadians would like to see a shift to having most vehicles on the roads be electric. An even larger majority, 77%, feel the transition to mostly electric vehicles is bound to happen.
“This is something we have been interested in doing for some time,” said Allan Knibbs, Facilities Director. “As demand for electric vehicles increases amongst our students and employees, I anticipate we will install more charging stations at our campuses.”
The college has long been committed to sustainability. The institution’s Bachelor of Business Administration program is focused on Sustainable Business Practices. It has also undertaken several green initiatives, including the installation of a solar wall on one of the Trades buildings, solar technology on both the Purcell House student housing building and Kootenay Centre roofs, an expanded recycling program, water bottle filling stations available to students and employees, and most recently, the addition of a composter to convert food waste generated at the Cranbrook main campus.
All new construction at the college also aims to meet provincial environmental standards. The new student housing village meets Step 5 of the BC Energy Step Code requirements, representing “net-zero energy ready,” the standard met by the most energy-efficient projects developed today.
The new charging station is located in the parking lot adjacent to the Aboriginal Gathering Place at the college’s main campus.
