Community quickly rallies for hockey team

Good always comes from bad in the East Kootenay, it seems.

Another beautiful example of that is currently on display following the Cranbrook Friendship Kootenay Ice Hockey Team’s report of more than $30,000 being allegedly misappropriated by a volunteer.

Hockey players, family members and friends spent the past 18 plus months fundraising in order for the team to travel to Japan – in less than two weeks. The loss of the funds placed the prospects of the team making the trip in serious jeopardy.

And then the beauty of this community rose above the rest.

Literally overnight the team is once again looking like it is heading across the Pacific Ocean as community members have dug down and (so far) raised $24,500 (as of noon, April 13).

“Our Cranbrook, Kimberley and surrounding communities have been so amazing. In 12 short hours, donations have been made and committed to our team,” team volunteers stated on Facebook this morning.

“We are overwhelmed with gratitude from everyone’s generosity. Thank you so very much. Our 2019 Cranbrook Friendship Hockey Team is now back in a position to be able to have the trip we originally planned for the boys. Thank you doesn’t seem like enough, but THANK YOU!”
