Online event will have many of the same features as annual in-person fair

College of the Rockies is joining with WorkBC to host the East Kootenay Virtual Career Fair on Wednesday, March 3, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“Because of the ongoing pandemic, our Career Fair has transitioned to a virtual event for this year,” said Jenn Smith, Co-op and Employment Services Coordinator.

“The experience will remain similar, however, as our online platform will still allow job seekers to submit their resumes to employers, to video or text chat with business representatives, and to attend virtual breakout sessions presented by employers and industry experts.”

The East Kootenay Virtual Career Fair is a collaborative effort between the college, local WorkBC Centres, and Kootenay Rockies Tourism and aims to bring employers and job seekers together. Attendance at the event is open to all members of the public, free of charge. Employers looking to join the event have until March 2 to register.

“The list of employers taking part continues to grow. Attendees can expect to find representatives from a wide range of industries and not-for-profit organizations including local, provincial, and national employers,” Smith added. “This is an excellent opportunity to find a new career or summer employment and to connect with prospective employers, all from the comfort of your home.”

Workshops and services aimed at helping prepare job seekers for their employment search will also be offered.

For job seekers, WorkBC will present Cover Letters and Resumes on February 23 from 6 to 8 p.m., and Virtual Interviews and Networking on February 25 from 6 to 7 p.m.

Employers are invited to participate in Virtual Interviewing on March 1 from 6 to 7 p.m.

“The key to success at a career fair is to be prepared,” said Kris Dickeson, Communications and Marketing at Cranbrook WorkBC Centre. “Our workshops help job seekers improve their existing resume or write a new one, learn top tips for success and prepare for job searching in the virtual world.  This includes etiquette for virtual meetings, visual backgrounds, appearance and marketing their skills. For employers, it’s an opportunity to learn the tricks and techniques to mastering video conferencing platforms and ways to conduct successful virtual interviews.”

College of the Rockies workshops include How to Successfully Attend a Virtual Career Fair: Tips and Tricks on February 24 from 2 to 3 p.m. and Resume Rescue drop-in sessions on February 23 and 25 from 1 – 2:30 p.m.
