Cranbrook RCMP announces mental health position

Cranbrook RCMP would like to announce a new position that focuses on an ever-increasing community issue of mental health.

Constable Erin Stevenson has been named to the position and slated to start her new role in early October.

Cranbrook RCMP saw a large increase in calls for service that are related to mental health when compared to previous years.

“Mental health illnesses have really come to the forefront not just on a policing front but a community front. The RCMP has recognized that society in general has struggled to meet the needs of those with a mental illness and the criminal justice system is not always the best route to take,” said Detachment Commander Staff Sergeant Hector Lee.

“Having an officer dedicated and proactive to this issue will reduce the number of calls for service so that our other officers can remain proactive in protecting Cranbrook and surrounding areas. City officials have been consulted and have been very supportive in developing this initiative.”

The RCMP Mental Health Liaison Officer will work in partnership with community agencies such as East Kootenay Regional Hospital, Interior Mental Health, Adult and Youth Probation, East Kootenay Addiction Services Society, MCFD and other community resources to help deliver appropriate and timely services to our clients.
