Experience added to Kootenay ICE roster

The Kootenay ICE continued to shape its Western Hockey League (WHL) roster in advance of tonight’s (Thursday, Oct. 12) home ice clash against the Central Division leading Red Deer Rebels.

The club yesterday acquired former Rebel Jeff de Wit from the Regina Pats for 1999-born forward Tanner Sidaway and a seventh round draft pick in 2018. Listed as a centre, de Wit has scored a goal and added an assist in seven games with the powerhouse Pats so far this season.

De Wit, a 1998-born forward is in his fourth season in the WHL. The Red Deer, Alberta resident has 41 playoff games under his belt including 22 with the Pats during the team’s run to the WHL Championship Final last spring. De Wit also participated in the 2016 Memorial Cup as a member of the Red Deer Rebels. In those 41 games, de Witt has eight goals and 14 points.

“Jeff has played on winning teams in Red Deer and Regina, two very good programs,” said Matt Cockell, President and General Manager. “We look forward to getting him in our lineup.”

De Wit was a first round draft pick (14th overall) by the Rebels in 2013.

Sidaway leaves the ICE after spending one season with the team. He recorded two goals and eight points in 65 regular season games in 2016-17. This season, Sidaway has one goal and two points in five games.

The ICE also announced yesterday it had released 2000-born forward Eli Lieffers.

With the move the ICE are down to 24 players on their roster.

The following is the list of players on the ICE roster:

GOAL: Bailey Brkin, Kurtis Chapman.

DEFENCE: Martin Bodak, Cale Fleury, Dallas Hines, Sam Huston, Zachary Patrick, Ryan Pouliot, Bobby Russell, Loeden Schaufler.

FORWARD: Brett Davis, Cameron Hausinger, Michael King, Gilian Kohler, Peyton Krebs, Colton Kroeker, Vince Loschiavo, Barrett Sheen, Sebastian Streu, Kaeden Taphorn, Keenan Taphorn, Colton Veloso, Alec Baer, Jeff de Wit.

The ICE are currently fifth in the Central with a record of two wins, four losses and an overtime loss. The club is only three point shy of first place and lead their Calgary Hitmen rivals by two points.

The ICE are back in action against the Red Deer Rebels tonight, Thursday, October 12 at Western Financial Place.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased online at ICEcountry.ca or at the ICE Gear Store at Western Financial Place.
