Hundreds stand in solidarity in Cranbrook

Hundreds of protesters took to Baker Street in Cranbrook June 5 as part of the Black Lives Matter demonstrations and Cranbrook Stands in Solidarity event.
The protests and local event, which later moved to Rotary Park, were sparked by the death of George Floyd, killed in Minneapolis, Minnesota police custody by a white officer kneeling on his neck for more than eight minutes, slowly suffocating him to death. Four police officers were charged in the aftermath. They are Derek Chauvin, Thomas Lane, Tou Thao, and J. Alexander Kueng.
In the days since his death, unrest in every corner of the United States continues with riots, fires and vandalism. So far in Canada many of the protests have been peaceful with Cranbrook demonstrators focusing on the challenges and struggles black people and indigenous people experience daily.
