ICE continue to tinker with trades
The tinkering and tweaking continues for the floundering Kootenay ICE.
Sporting a mere eight wins in 43 tries thus far in this now lost Western Hockey League season, the ICE have brought in three new faces in trades over the past few days.
The ICE Hockey on Jan. 9 that it has signed 1998-born goaltender Curtis Meger to a Standard Player Agreement. In addition, Meger will immediately join the team for the remainder of the 2018-19 season.
The Regina, Saskatchewan native played in 27 games with the Prince Albert Raiders last season. In those 27 games, he posted a 3.43 goals against average, a .886 save percentage and a record of 8-10-5-1.
This season, Meger has played 20 games with the Lloydminster Bobcats of the Alberta Junior Hockey League.
Meger joins the most defensively porous team in the WHL, as the ICE has allowed 202 goals, or 4.69 per game so far.
The ICE also announced on Wednesday that it has acquired 2000-born defenceman Brenden Kwiatkowski from the Moose Jaw Warriors in exchange for a 2019 ninth round draft pick.
This season, the Grande Prairie, Alberta native has two assists in 14 games. Throughout his WHL career, Kwiatkowski has played in 36 regular season games with the Warriors, recording three assists.
On Jan. 7 the ICE acquired ‘00-born forward Brandon Machado and a fifth round draft pick in 2021 from the Saskatoon Blades. In exchange, the Blades receive ‘00-born forward Cyle McNabb, who was obtained just last week from the Vancouver Giants in a trade involving blueliner Dallas Hines.
Machado, from Airdrie, Alberta, was selected by the Blades in the fifth round (101st overall) of the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft.
This season, Machado has two goals and three points in 35 games. In 97 career regular season games, Machado has three goals and four assists for seven points.
“While it was certainly not our intention to move Cyle when acquiring him, after conversations with him, this was determined to be in the best interest of the player,” said Matt Cockell, President and General Manager. “Brandon is a player that we have had discussions with Saskatoon about for quite some time and we look forward to adding a player who is excited about his opportunity with our team.”
The next home game for the ICE is the Pink the Rink Be a Superhero Anti-Bullying Game on Saturday, January 26.
The ICE will need superhero help in this one as the WHL-leading Prince Albert Raiders come to town sporting an audacious 35-5-1 record. The Raiders are truly an offensive team, leading the league in goals scored with 187 (4.56 per game). They are also the most penalized club in the Eastern Conference.
