ICE ink fifth 2017 draft selection
The Kootenay ICE continue to build for the near future.
The Western Hockey League club announced yesterday that it’s signed 2002-born forward Owen Pederson.
The ICE selected the Stony Plain, Alberta native in the fifth round (89th overall) in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft.
The 15-year-old is currently playing for the OHA Edmonton Prep of the CSSHL. Through 13 games, Pederson has one goal and five points. During the 2016-17 season, he recorded 15 goals and 34 points in 30 regular season games with the OHA Edmonton Bantam Prep.
“We have seen Owen play a number of times since training camp and every time he has taken a step, we are very happy with his development,” said Matt Cockell, President and General Manager. “This is an exciting day for Owen and the ICE.”
With Friday’s announcement, the ICE have signed five of their top six draft picks from the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft – Connor McClennon (first round, second overall), Anson McMaster (second round, 23rd overall), James Form (third round, 45th overall), Will Gurski (fourth round, 72nd overall) and Owen Pederson (fifth round, 89th overall).
This injection of youthful talent will find itself in the line-up when Peyton Krebs, recently ranked as the 82nd best NHL prospect under the age of 21 by The Hockey News, enters his prime-time seasons with the ICE. Krebs will be eligible for the 2019 NHL draft.
The ICE are home this evening, Saturday, November 25, against the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Today’s game is Food Drive Night presented by Cranbrook Dodge. The ICE and Cranbrook Dodge are encouraging fans to bring a non-perishable food item or cash donation to the game, all of which will go towards the Cranbrook Food Bank.
Tickets for Saturday’s game can be purchased online at ICEcountry.ca, at the ICE Gear Store at Western Financial Place or by calling 250-417-0322.
