A profound, positive energy continues to build around the Kootenay ICE as the Western Hockey League (WHL) franchise’s new ownership endeavour to reach out to the community.

Following a successful community barbecue at Bridge Interiors last weekend, ICE ownership and management held a corporate kick-off at the Prestige Inn and Conference Centre yesterday, introducing new key staff members and unveiling a new jersey for the upcoming WHL season.

About 200 people – business owners/managers, media and hockey fans – turned out to meet team owner/governor Greg Fettes and President and General Manager Matt Cockell, as well as to be introduced to new head coach James Patrick, assistant coaches Jon Klemm, Roman Vopat, Gordon Burnett and several other key senior staff members.

Fettes, noting ownership was seeking a new look for the ICE, unveiled the team’s new jersey. He said the intent of the design was to give the team a tougher look.

Part-time Fernie resident Patrick, fresh from an 11-year NHL coaching career, which followed a significant and storied 21-year NHL career, said he is looking forward to working with his young charges, teaching sound fundamentals and systems.

Also introduced were new club Manager of Hockey Operations and Player Experience Jake Heiseger and Director of Corporate Partnerships and Fan Experience Reid Mitchell, of Invermere and Brant Hilton, Manager, Communications and Community.

Denis Sproxton was introduced as the team’s goaltending consultant, along with Director of Scouting Garnet Kazuik, trainer/ equipment manager Darcy Ewanchuk and athletic consultant Cory Cameron, sales consultant Don MacMillan and office manager Sara Jerke.

Fettes also captured the first “go ICE go” chant of the year and immediately tweeted it.

The club’s Drive to 25 ticket sales campaign continues to gain steam, with all but one of the Western Financial Place box/suites having been sold.
