India Sherret stable after Olympic ski cross crash
Cranbrook’s India Sherret, 21, is reported to be in stable condition after being stretchered off the Phoenix Snowpark in Pyeongchang, South Korea yesterday while competing in women’s ski cross at the Olympic Winter Games.
Alpine Canada Alpin (ACA) reported: “Sherret was holding well in her heat, sitting in second-place but got back off a feature mid-way down and landed hard on the crest of another feature. Sherret took a hard impact and was taken off course by the medical team.”
“She was taken to hospital where she is being assessed. She is in stable condition. Team Canada’s doctors will continue to assess her condition,” ACA stated today.
Sherret shared her excitement and feelings prior to her Olympic debut on Instagram, including best wishes for Olympic teammate Chris Del Bosco who crashed and was hospitalized the day before: “Olympic memories are the best memories. I’m so grateful to have my parents here to cheer me on tomorrow in Korea, just like they did six years ago back in Kühtai for the Youth Olympics.
“I know that no matter how tomorrow goes I’ve achieved a lot just by qualifying to be here at the games. Tomorrow I want to bring my whole self to the table and perform like I know I can. If I do that, then I will be happy regardless of result. There are lots of years ahead for medals.
“Big shout out to our mens team for killing it yesterday. @lemanracing becoming Olympic champ and @dunc_ski and @drury.kc skiing amazing races. So proud to call you guys teammates. Best wishes for a speedy recovery go out to @chrisdelbosco after taking a serious digger in yesterdays race.”
The sting of Sherret’s own serious digger will be alleviated somewhat when she learns teammates Kelsey Serwa of Kelowna and Brittany Phelan of Mont-Tremblant, QC went on to capture gold and silver in the event, pushing Canada to a new record for medals won in a Winter Games.
Serwa was the silver medallist in the event in 2014.
Sherret was sitting in 11th place after the qualification runs.
