Junior Girls second in Sweet Sixteen tourney

The Mount Baker Secondary School Junior Girls Basketball team travelled to Kelowna last weekend to play in the Immaculata High School ‘Sweet Sixteen’ basketball tournament.

The 16 teams from the Lower Mainland, Okanagan and Prince George area participated in the three-day tournament. Four top 15 provincially ranked teams were included in the team mix.

Mt. Baker opened the tournament defeating Vernon Secondary 56-15, and advanced to play third ranked Kelowna Secondary.

The game featured eight lead changes before Mt. Baker prevailed 44-33. The Wild moved to the semi-finals to play 10th ranked Duchess Park.

Mt. Baker gained control early and withstood a furious rally from Duchess Park to advance to the tournament final 50-38.

The final game featured the sixth ranked Valleyview Secondary. The Wild girls played very hard, but Valleyview’s superior shooting and excellent interior defence proved the difference in a 47-42 loss.

The Tournament All Star Committee selected Ashley Giesbrecht first team All-Star. Summer Blackmore was selected as the Defensive Player of the Tournament.  Both players are sure to be on the radar for college and university coaches.
