Ktunaxa and UBC teaming up for two day conference

The Ktunaxa Nation and UBC (Human Early Learning Partnership) are sponsoring ‘Call to Gather: Developing a Nation Determined, Community Minded Research Agenda’ on Nov. 12-13.

Learn how research provides understanding of the effects of trauma and stress on physical and intellectual development and find out what you can do to promote strong healthy Ktunaxa citizens and communities during the two-day event at the Ktunaxa Government Building in Cranbrook.

Guest speakers will be sharing insights during the gathering.

Dr. Ruth Elwood Martin and Dr. Adele Diamond, UBC professors and researchers, will share their data and insights on stress and trauma affecting brain development
, improving brain functions, and reducing ADHD, addictions and conduct disorders
. They will also highlight the effects of unmet emotional/social/physical needs on academic success, nurturing the whole child through traditional cultural activities
 and participatory health research (PHR) results in social action.

Joe Pierre Jr. (pictured), School District No. 5 Aboriginal Enhancement Agreement Facilitator and St. Mary’s Band councillor, will present the Ktunaxa Creation Story and Michele Sam, PhD student and researcher at UBC, will review the May epigenetics conference and relate how this knowledge and research support the collective Ktunaxa Nation vision and links to this gathering.
