Local students wanting to become a paramedic can now train closer to home thanks to a Primary Care Paramedic program (PCP) that will be returning to Cranbrook.

The PCP program is an 8.5-month program starting September 10, and runs Friday through Sunday every second weekend.

Students completing this training can work as a Primary Care Paramedic, which are in high demand across the province. Applications are being accepted now and close August 3.

“Students enjoy a better learning experience when instructors are passionate and experienced teachers,” said Kathy McKay, local lead instructor for the program, and a past paramedic with over 20 years’ leadership experience. “We bring local paramedics into the classroom so that students can hear first-hand how skills and concepts translate in the field. It augments learning and also helps them build connections with individuals who are likely to be their future peers.”

This focus on classroom expertise is a founding value for Columbia Paramedic Academy.

“We know how difficult it can be for students in smaller, non-urban communities to access quality training,” said Nicola Harper, President of the Academy. “We are proud to return to Cranbrook to offer this life-saving training right in the communities that need it the most.”

One of the pre-requisites for the training is a two-week Emergency Responder course.  This course will be offered through a sister company, Columbia Medical Training, in July.  It will take place July 19-30 (M-F) and also allows individuals to qualify for work as an entry-level paramedic.
