Programming continues through autumn at Cranbrook Arts
Cranbrook Arts is revving up for the fall after a fabulous summer despite all the downers in the world.
Our summer art camps saw over 60 students come through and I think we can say we all had fun – instructing, participating and observing. Huge thanks to Kaleigh Sandberg, Megan Stewart and Shyre Cupples whose high energy fun-filled days kept the kids busy and creative. Thanks also to volunteer Sarah who frequently joined the group to help out.
Our leaders have been complimented on their classes and as one parent said, “Thank you for providing this fun child care at an affordable price. She learned lots too.”
We are pleased to let parents and students know that our summer leaders Kaleigh and Shyre will be offering ‘Art after School’ every Thursday from September 23 to December 2.
Kaori Fletcher will also be offering ‘Paint and Pals’ on Mondays after school. Any students who have been fortunate to be in any of these young instructor’s classes will let you know they are a lot of fun. These fall classes will run from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. and registration is online at our website.
For older students Joel Robison will be running a morning photography workshop on Saturday September 18 titled, “Tips Taking the Best Selfies and Portraits.”
Two After School Beginner Pottery classes for different age groups pf children are set to begin in October. Please watch the website for dates.
Joel Robison will also be running a ‘Seeing Beyond Ordinary’ Photography class on September 25 where he will explore local scenes and share editing tips.
Adult Pottery classes have already begun but have been full before we can advertise. A beginner Pottery Mug and Bowl class is set to begin in October. Keep checking the website for dates.
Clay Time Studio entrance is at the back or the 1401 Art Space and you can always leave a note in the front door mail box if you would like to add your name to a wait list.
We also have classes being lined up with John de Jong so stay tuned.

If you have not yet visited our inaugural exhibition, ‘Kootenay’s Best,’ time is running out – only two more weekend to see this inspiring selection of Kootenay work.
The Gallery will be closed for the weekends of September 9 and 16 while we prepare for ‘The Modern Elder Exhibit’ coming in from the Okanagan.
This exhibit will feature paintings and a video from the North Okanagan Chapter of Canadian federation of Artists. We are thrilled to be offering this exhibit.
With modern increases in human lifespan, the period of Elderhood (also called the Third Age) may now span 30 or more years of our lives. While we are living longer than before, many people see old age as a condition to be dreaded, neglected and denied, and we try to avoid the signs of our own aging and mortality. From personal experiences, this group of elders hopes to change society’s attitude toward aging, including adjustments in how we see the changes in our own bodies, how we care for older people, and how we can change the concept of aging from one of decline and disease to one of potentials, possibilities, and joys.
Our featured artist for September in the shop at 1013 Baker St. is Lyndell Classon.
Lyndell is a multi-talented artist having turned her hand to many different genre. Her work is usually on display in the shop at 1013 Baker St.
Lyndell says of herself; Lyndell grew up with a trumpet in one hand and a paint brush in the other. She was notorious for colouring in her older brothers’ favourite picture books. She felt that she could improve on what she saw on the page. Before her love of scribbling made it onto the wallpaper, her parents enrolled her in weekly art classes. They also made sure there was a steady supply of blank paper scattered around the house.
She currently resides in Cranbrook, where the local flora and fauna continue to inspire her.
