Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services (CFES) this morning reports the former Kootenay Springs building fire (Oct. 17) is not being connected to recent fires in that area of the city.

The large Saturday blaze was the third fire in just over six weeks in the area between Victoria Avenue/Theatre Road and 6th Street North.

The old Royal Canadian Legion and May May Restaurant fire took place Sept. 1 and CFES responded in full to a structure fire at the Westland Insurance office off Theatre Road during the early morning of Sept. 13.

“There have been several fires recently, which are all in different stages of investigation,” said Scott Driver, Director of Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services. “Although circumstances surrounding several recent commercial fires appears to be similar, we have not connected any of them directly. We continue to work with our partners to investigate and determine cause and origin of these fires. Our investigations are ongoing.”

CFES firefighters responded to a structure fire Saturday night at the former Kootenay Springs building on 6th Street North.

Members with CFES received the call at 6:50 p.m. on October 17 and responded with two apparatus and four firefighters. Upon arrival on scene, an additional 19 personnel and two additional engines were called in.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the building of origin and limited the loss caused by this fire.

The location of the fire presented many challenges with the close proximity of the railway and the highway.

The City of Cranbrook Oct. 19 in a media release stated it is thankful for the support received by the RCMP, CP Rail and the BC Ambulance Service.

“There are no injuries to report because of this incident and we are very thankful for this outcome,” the city said.
