Remembrance Day will be different, but not forgotten
Remembrance Day in Cranbrook will always be a day to remember and reflect on those who have served our country and the ones who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
COVID-19 pandemic protocols has caused the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 24 Cranbrook to make changes to Remembrance Day while still providing a meaningful commemoration.
“There are no options to safely gather at the cenotaph this year,” said Legion president Edith LeClair. “We have made plans to assure the health and safety of our community while still offering our remembrance and gratitude.”
“We have not taken this decision lightly and I know there will be so many with heavy hearts that look forward to gathering with the community every November 11.”
The Legion will be staging a very small private ceremony to ensure that the enduring tradition of honour is not broken. Plans are underway to offer video and pictures of the event to the public.
Cranbrook residents are asked to please take time at 11 a.m. on November 11 to pause for a minute of silence and reflection.
“Bring your household together to say a few words and to honour those that have given so much for our country,” said LeClair.
The Legion encourages displays in the front window of your home such as big pictures of poppies or a lit candle to create a community wide display of remembrance. If you can manage, gather your family the front yard of your home and create a neighbourhood moment of silence.
The Legion branch will open at noon on November 11 to members and veterans.
Following regulations, the capacity of the lounge has been greatly reduced. The Legion will carefully follow capacity and provincial protocols to ensure the health and safety of everyone.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
