Rowing Club AGM April 4
The water is waiting for us, beneath the ice. Can you hear it calling?
Rockies Rowing Club members are waiting patiently for the ice to drop into Jimsmith Lake as the weather warms. Our first event of the season is our Annual General Meeting taking place April 4 , 7 p.m. at Laurie Middle School, 1808- 2nd Street South. You are welcome to attend.
We are having a name the boat contest. As AGMs go this is a full agenda with President report, Coach report, financial report and voting on constitutional changes that are needed for the Society Act and voting on our new membership fees.
Dues are reasonable; for learning to row, under $100 and joining the club, under $200. As a member you have access to coaching and using club equipment during the season early May to late October and dryland training during the off-season.
If you like to be competitive we provide opportunities to attend regattas and if you want to row for health and wellness there will be chances to row on your own in a single or in a crew. This year we will be able to teach sweep rowing with a change in our equipment thanks to a grant from Regional District of East Kootenay.
We teach sculling first, as the transition from sculling to sweep is easier than the transition from sweep to sculling. Check youTube videos for the difference between sweep rowing and sculling. It involves one oar for sweep rowing vs two oars for sculling. There has been no reference to paddles or paddling. We are rowing with oars. Think, long boats, long oars. That is rowing.
Racing during the season we plan to attend Vernon’s Lap the Lake in June, Alberta Open in July in Calgary, Nelson sprints in August, Head of the Pend Oreille in September and another Calgary regatta in October. There are some other regattas on the coast we may look at attending.
BC Summer Games is happening this summer in July, on the Island, in the Cowichan Valley. Zone 1 will be sending a crew. We are looking for youth born in 2002 or later (age 16 this year) wanting to learn to row and try out for the Games crew.
If you participate in winter sports and are looking for summer training, rowing is great cross-training. If you have learned to row previously, are in the age category and are interested in attending the games this summer get in touch with us at [email protected]
Rockies Rowing Club has been rowing on Jimsmith Lake since 2001 and in the past few years we have focused on increasing the number of boats we have and increasing membership. If you are adventurous enough to try a unique sport (you cross the finish line backward in a race) we are the activity for you. Join us at the AGM for more details and when the water is free from the grip of winter meet us on Jimsmith Lake to learn why once you move a boat through the water you are hooked.
