Struggling ICE continue to re-tool and re-load
The Kootenay ICE did the Red Deer Rebels a favour yesterday as the Western Hockey League Central Division leaders vie to maintain that lead.
The ICE traded two 19-year-old forwards, second overall scorer (and lone NHL prospect/Dallas Stars) Brett Davis and Cameron Hausinger to the Rebels for nine players and draft picks.
The ICE acquired 2001-born forward River Fahey, â00-born forward Austin Schellenberg, â01-born forward Justin Svenson, â03-born forward Chase Bertholet, a 2019 first round pick, a 2019 third round draft pick, a 2019 sixth round draft pick, a 2020 second round draft pick and a conditional 2022 third round draft pick.
âWe are excited to welcome Chase, Justin, River and Austin to our organization,â said Matt Cockell, President and General Manager. âCam and Brett have been great players for the ICE and ambassadors in the community, we wish them well in Red Deer.â
River Fahey is in his first full season in the WHL. The Campbell River native was selected in the fourth round (74th overall) in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft by the Rebels. Fahey has registered one assist in 21 games during the 2018-19 regular season.
Austin Schellenberg is in his second full season in the WHL. The Grande Prairie, Alberta native has recorded one goal and five assists for six points in 19 games during the 2018-19 regular season.
Justin Svenson was selected in the third round (48th overall) in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft by the Rebels. Svenson is from Ile Des Chenes, Manitoba. He has six goals and five assists for 11 points in 15 games with the Swan Valley Stampeders of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. Svenson has also played in 19 WHL games with the Red Deer Rebels.
Chase Bertholet was selected in the fifth round (94th overall) in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft by the Rebels. Bertholet, from Thompson, Manitoba, has five goals and 11 assists for 16 points in 21 games with the Prince Albert Mintos of the Saskatchewan Midget Hockey League. During the 2017-18 season, Bertholet scored 30 goals and added 38 assists for 68 points in 36 games with the Norman Wolves in the Winnipeg Bantam 1 AAA Hockey League.
The ICE also announced on Friday that it’s acquired â99-born forward Jack Cowell from the Kelowna Rockets. In return, the Rockets receive a 2020 third round draft pick.
Cowell, from Winnipeg, Man., is in his third full season in the WHL. He has recorded two goals and three assists for five points in 26 games with the Rockets this season. Throughout his WHL career, Cowell has 16 goals and 35 assists for 51 points in 156 regular season games.
âWe are excited to add Jack to our forward group. Cowell is a versatile experienced forward that will help our group immediately,” Cockell said.
A 6-foot-1, 191-pound product of Oakbank, Man., Davis was selected by the Stars in the sixth round, 163rd overall, at the 2017 NHL Draft. In 24 games this season, he had 19 points (7G-12A), including six power-play goals, placing him second in team scoring.
Originally selected in the fourth round, 78th overall, by the Hurricanes in the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft, Davis will join his third Central Division team.
Over the course of a 211-game WHL career with the Hurricanes and ICE, Davis has posted 120 points (55G-65A), including 20 power-play goals, four short-handed goals, and five game-winning goals. Last season, Davis set career-highs with the ICE, posting 58 points (25G-33A) in all 72 games.
Hausinger is a 5-foot-10, 187-pound product of Anchorage, Alaska. Through 27 games this season, he had 17 points (8G-9A), including five power-play goals, tying him for third in team scoring.
Hausinger was originally selected by the Saskatoon Blades in the seventh round, 135th overall, of the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft.
He previously played with the Rebels in the 2016-17 WHL regular season, posting 12 points (7G-5A) in 41 games. He also appeared in seven WHL playoff games with Red Deer that season, scoring a single goal.
In 216 career WHL regular season games, Hausinger has recorded 86 points (42G-44A), including 10 power-play goals, one short-handed goal, and two game-winning goals.
The next home game for the 7-18-3-1 ICE is against the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Wednesday, December 5.
The âCanes will be sporting two shiny new pieces from their own trade earlier this week, Vegas Golden Knights prospect Jake Leschyshyn and Colorado Avalanche prospect Nick Henry from the Regina Pats, bolstering an already loaded forward corps.
In exchange, the Pats received 19-year-old forward Jadon Joseph and 18-year-old forward Ty Kolle, along with a treasure trove of picks.
In 2019, the Pats receive the Hurricanes first-round selection and third-round selection, as well as the Swift Current Broncos eighth-round selection. In 2020, the Pats receive the Broncos first-round selection. Finally, in 2022, the Pats receive the Hurricanes fourth-round pick. Conditionally, should Leschyshyn and Henry return for their respective overage seasons, the Pats will receive two more draft choices.
