Youth get free leadership training in conservation
Polluted air and drinking water, species extinction, climate change. These are the terms that make headlines daily in B.C. For youth in the Kootenays, these terms are the rallying cry for their generation; the call to action.
conservastion This summer, the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society’s BC Chapter (CPAWS-BC) will build the capacity of 25 youth from the Kootenays. Take Back the Wild will provide free, comprehensive training for young people under 30 to become conservation leaders on local environmental issues that matter to them. It will also continue the network of passionate leaders across B.C. who work together to protect BC’s wild spaces.

Protecting our wilderness requires support from multiple generations and diverse communities to be successful and sustainable. However, many traditional environmental education programs do not offer practical skills in planning and delivering conservation projects. There is a generation of young adults who are incredibly passionate about our environment, and this is the opportunity for them to gain the necessary skills to advocate for its protection.
The project will kick off in Johnson’s Landing from June 5-7. After the training weekend, participants will partner with local community groups or start their own local, conservation project.
We are looking for young leaders in the Kootenays to join us for this project. We are accepting applications until May 5, at 5 p.m. PST. The summit is free to attend, accommodation and food is included. We will also provide travel subsidies for those who require it.

CPAWS-BC is a non-profit, grassroots-based conservation organization that protects wilderness in every corner of B.C. and deep into the ocean. We remain the only national non-profit organization devoted exclusively to protecting Canada’s wilderness heritage. CPAWS-BC has partnered with Wildsight for this project.
