Arts, culture, sport programs boosted by gaming grants
Local arts, culture and sport programs have received funding from B.C.’s Community Gaming Grants.
“These programs bring people together, fostering community connections through art, cultural programming and athletic activities for all ages and abilities,” said Selina Robinson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. “Our government is proud to support organizations contributing to vibrant, healthy communities across B.C.”
Over 700 not-for-profit organizations throughout the province are receiving approximately $18.3 million to deliver opportunities for people of all ages to participate in visual and performing arts, literature and festivals, as well as Indigenous and cultural programs.
“These art, culture and sport programs provide opportunities for people to build community, foster artistic expression and engage in healthy activities,” said Lisa Beare, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture. “Our government is proud to support these organizations to deliver programs that support inclusion and benefit people of all ages and backgrounds in communities across B.C.”
The following local arts and culture organizations received funding.
Cranbrook
Cranbrook Community Theatre Society $10,500; Columbia Basin Institute of Regional History $2,000; Cranbrook and District Arts Council $11,000; Cranbrook Archives, Museum and Landmark Foundation $33,750; Symphony of the Kootenays Association $19,200; Wycliffe Exhibition Association $16,500.
Invermere
Columbia Valley Arts Council Arts and Culture $29,000.
Kimberley
Kimberley Arts Council – Centre 64 Arts and Culture $11,000.
The province is also providing approximately $27 million to more than 800 sports sector organizations in 2019-20. These community-based sports programs create opportunities for everyone to get active in programs such as soccer, swimming, hockey, cycling, martial arts, skiing and Special Olympics.
The following local sports organizations received funding.
Cranbrook
B.C. Seniors Games Society – Zone 7 $8,000; Cranbrook Amateur Swim Association $18,000; Cranbrook Lacrosse Association $6,720; Cranbrook Minor Ball Association $30,000; Cranbrook Minor Hockey Association $60,000; Cranbrook Key City Gymnastics Society $53,000; Special Olympics British Columbia Society – Kimberley/Cranbrook $6,000.
Fernie
Fernie Alpine Ski Team $30,000; Fernie Ghostriders Junior Hockey Club $15,000; Special Olympics British Columbia Society – Elk Valley $2,000.
Invermere
Columbia Valley Rockies Booster Society $15,000; Columbia Valley Skating Club $24,500; Columbia Valley Youth Soccer Association $8,000; Peaks Gymnastics Society $17,500; The Invermere District Curling Club Society $20,000; Toby Creek Nordic Ski Club $5,000.
Kimberley
Kimberley Curling Club $18,000; Kimberley Gymnastics Society $28,600; Kimberley Minor Hockey Association $23,500; Kimberley Nordic Club $10,000; Kimberley Seahorse Swim Association $10,000.
Radium Hot Springs
Columbia Valley Swim Club $12,500.
Sparwood
Sparwood Skating Club $7,000.
The Community Gaming Grants program provides up to $140 million to about 5,000 not-for-profit organizations in British Columbia each year.
