Banff campground closed after wolf incident
Parks Canada today announced it has closed a Banff National Park campground following a wolf incident early this morning.
At around 1 a.m., (Friday, August 9), Parks Canada received a report of a wolf incident at Rampart Creek Campground on the Icefields Parkway in Banff National Park.
A wolf attacked a tent at the campground leaving one camper inside the tent with injuries to their hand and arm. The individual reported the attack and was transferred to hospital in Banff. No significant wildlife attractants or food were found inside or in the immediate vicinity of the tent.
Parks Canada found the wolf believed to be involved approximately one km south of Rampart Creek Campground and destroyed the animal. It is believed only one wolf was involved.
“Incidents like these are very rare. Visitor safety is of the utmost importance for Parks Canada. As a precautionary measure, Rampart Creek Campground has been closed and will remain closed until a full investigation has been completed,” Parks Canada stated in an information bulletin.
Parks Canada continues to monitor wildlife activity in the area and will take further steps if necessary, however this appears to be an isolated incident.
Parks Canada is asking all park users to practice safe camping practices, obey all camping regulations, keep food and garbage secure at all times, and as per normal procedure wildlife sightings can be reported to Banff Dispatch at 403-762-1473.
Rampart Creek Campground is about 10 km north of Saskatchewan Crossing.
