Big weekend for local KIJHL clubs

It’s a busy and important weekend for the East Kootenay’s three Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) clubs.

The Eddie Mountain Division-leading Kimberley Dynamiters (16 wins, two losses, one overtime loss) are playing host to the Neil Murdoch Division-leading Nelson Leafs this evening, Nov. 22, at the Civic Centre. Game time is 7 p.m.

The fourth place Columbia Valley Rockies (8-7-3), clawing to stay in playoff positioning, host the third place Creston Valley Thundercats (11-4-4) at 7:30 p.m. at Invermere’s Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena.

The Fernie Ghostriders, managing to keep ahead of the Thundercats in second with a 12-6-3 record, are in Castlegar this evening, taking on the last place Rebels (6-10-3) at the Castlegar & District Recreation Centre. Game time is 7 p.m. (Pacific).

The Riders knocked off Nelson 6-4 at the Fernie Memorial Arena last night (Nov. 21), with Dylan Defosse leading the way with two goals and an assist, and Jordon Kromm with two goals. Aiden Gleisner chipped in a goal and a helper and Johnny Elias with a goal and Gavin Lawrie with two assists. Ethan Fitzgerald made 42 saves for the win.

Putting on the miles, Fernie heads south of the line on Saturday, Nov. 23 for a clash with the (11-10-2) Spokane Braves at the Eagles Ice Arena.

Also on Saturday, league scoring leader Brock Palmer and the Nitros host Creston Valley at 7 p.m., while the Rockies play host to Beaver Valley Nitehawks, sporting a 13-3-1-2 record, good for second in the Neil Murdoch.
