Extreme Cold Warning for Elk Valley, KNP

Environment Canada has today (Jan. 15) issued an Extreme Cold Warning in effect for the Elk Valley and Yoho Park – Kootenay Park.

A period of very cold wind chills is expected, as bitterly cold Arctic air continues to remain entrenched over the area until Thursday.

Occasional winds to 15 km/h will give wind chill values down to minus 35.

Extreme cold puts everyone at risk, the Environment Canada warning notes.

“Keep emergency supplies in your vehicle such as extra blankets and jumper cables. If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside,” it advises.

The Extreme Cold Warning does not include the Columbia Valley, Cranbrook and Kimberley areas though cold it will be, with a forecast for minus 18 this afternoon, leading to wind chill minus 21 this evening and minus 16 overnight.
