Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting’s meteorological service is predicting snow flurries will end later this morning. However, variable flurries will continue tonight and for the weekend followed by dry conditions and sub-zero air temperatures of negative 15-20 degrees Celsius in the overnight hours.

Cranbrook, Kimberley and Columbia Valley: A quick-moving system moves in Saturday morning lasting into the evening before tapering to flurries for the overnight. A trace to three cm of accumulation for the region. The Panorama area will see snow amounts from two to six cm today and one to four cm by Saturday morning. Wind will gust southeast from 30–50km/h starting in the afternoon and lasting into tonight.

Elk Valley: Flurries taper on and off for the remainder of Friday into Saturday with two to four cm of snowfall accumulations expected. Wind will gust westerly from 20–40km/h this afternoon and into the evening.

For the upcoming cold conditions, if outside, watch for wind chill related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.

Mainroad will be applying anti-icing chemicals and performing snow removal operations where necessary that will continue on all highways until the event passes and roadways are returned to the acceptable standard.
