Great Big Buddy Read is back
The Province of British Columbia has proclaimed Family Literacy Week (January 24-31) in British Columbia.
Family Literacy Week is an annual B.C. campaign that recognizes the importance of family literacy. Family literacy means families learning together through everyday interactions in their lives; reading together, cooking together, talking together, singing together, playing together.
Last year was the first East Kootenay wide Great Big Buddy Read.
This event had older students paired with younger students to read together in schools across the East Kootenay. This year the restrictions from Covid made this impossible, but the importance of reading together is just as significant as ever.
So Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) changed it up by asking Tim and Sage from Shred Kelly to be everyone’s big buddy.
They provided a video of them reading ‘The Book with No Pictures’ by B.J. Novak.
Teachers who send me a photo of the class watching the video will receive books for their classroom and individuals who post photos of themselves reading together with a child to social media will receive a free book if they use the hashtag #GBBR2021.
This is a CBAL initiative, but it is up to you to make it happen. And it is simple…

Take a picture and send it to me by Monday, Feb. 1. I will send you books for your classroom.
We want to show that literacy doesn’t happen alone. Literacy learners need support and The Great Big Buddy Read will show this support to families and to our communities.
