Happy International Women’s Day

By Jody Jacob

VAST Resource Solutions recognizes and celebrates International Women’s Day by introducing you to our Accounting/Administration officer Kersten Taylor, who has been with VAST since September 2014.

In addition to being the first point of contact for clients, Taylor’s responsibilities include reviewing and reconciling accounts, processing payments, and meticulously maintaining records of invoices and receipts. She is also the go-to for staff wanting administrative support for all aspects of project management.

“I pretty much do whatever needs to be done, on that day, depending on what’s happening and what’s needed,” said Taylor, who has a Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHSc) from the University of Calgary and is obtaining her CPA Designation.

“Working full time and trying to get my CPA — It’s been a long process; but I’m at the tail end of it and will be accredited as a CPA soon.”

Taylor is currently on maternity leave after welcoming a baby boy in July 2020, and will return to her role with VAST this summer.

“I’m definitely looking forward to going back to work and talking to adults again…but then I also have these days when I feel like I shouldn’t leave the baby,” said Taylor. “With part-time daycare and my husband working up north, one week on and one off, there’s going to be some juggling required.

“Thankfully, VAST is supportive. The company hires dedicated people who know what they’re doing, and then allows them flexibility to do it well. We’re very lucky, not just me but all the employees, in that we are trusted to self-manage our professional priorities, as long as our work is completed to a high standard, on time, and the clients are happy. Knowing I have this trust and flexibility makes my return to work that much easier.”

One of the things Taylor appreciates most in her position with VAST is the face-to-face relationships and diversity the job brings.

“It’s rewarding to be part of a team of people who are genuinely interested in their jobs,” said Taylor. “I feel like I have a meaningful role to play – that’s important to me. My goal is to make life easier for our clients and my coworkers so they can focus their expertise and efforts in the right places.”

Outside of work, Taylor enjoys riding her horse, walking her dogs, and rolling up her sleeves to maintain the acreage she calls home. March 8 is also her birthday – so double the reason to celebrate!

VAST knows our female colleagues bring a perspective and approach to our team that enriches the creativity and insight of projects.  And we acknowledge and celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women in the East Kootenay and around the world.
