Heat and air quality alerts issued

Environment Canada has issued a special air quality statement (Smoky Skies Bulletin) in effect for the East Kootenay, including the Columbia Valley and Cranbrook and Kimberley areas.

Several regions of B.C. are being impacted or are likely to be impacted by wildfire smoke over the next 24-48 hours. Smoke concentrations will continue to build in several regions of the province.

Individuals may experience symptoms such as increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath. Children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk.

If you or those in your care are exposed to wildfire smoke, consider taking extra precautions to reduce your exposure. Wildfire smoke is a constantly-changing mixture of particles and gasses which includes many chemicals that can harm your health. Learn more details.

The next bulletin update will be available July 4.

Additionally, Environment Canada’s Heat Warning continues for much of the East Kootenay as a dangerous long duration heat wave continues, albeit a bit cooler than the previous week.

Daytime highs ranging from 31 to 35 degrees Celsius combined with overnight lows of 16 to 20 degrees Celsius. Humidex values will reach the low 40s, Environment Canada said in its alert, which includes tomorrow (Sunday, July 4).

“An exceptionally strong ridge of high pressure over British Columbia will continue to bring record-breaking temperatures this week. The duration of this heat wave is concerning as there is little relief at night with elevated overnight temperatures. This record-breaking heat event will increase the potential for heat-related illnesses and increase the risk of wildfires due to drought conditions,” Environment Canada said.

The Heat Warning and Smoky Skies Bulletin does not include the Elk Valley or Kootenay National Park, with temperatures in those two areas ranging from 25 to 30 C in the daytime and down to about 10 C in the evening.
