Houseboating on Lake Koocanusa with Sunshine
Roadtrippin’ on Lake Koocanusa aboard a luxury Sunshine Houseboats craft
We are usually found exploring areas farther afield than our backyards in late August and early September.
Thanks to a global-events altering pandemic, we decided to focus all our travel in B.C. – and thus far that means we haven’t left our own bailiwick (since February) in 2020.
Thankfully, the East Kootenay is one helluva place to find oneself ‘stuck,’ for lack of a better word.
As we’ve seen most areas of the East Kootenay that don’t require Herculean hiking efforts, we opted for a view of our backyard we had not yet experienced (so fully) – four nights aboard ‘Miller Time,’ part of Sunshine Houseboats & Marina’s fleet.
In short: houseboating is renting a floating/cruising luxury hotel suite, complete with hot tub, fireplace, TV, full-get-‘er-done kitchen, BBQ, two bathrooms, waterslide and enough sleeping space for everyone aboard.
Of course, it’s helpful that you have competent people in your houseboat crew, who can drive the giant floating hotel/condo suite, and more importantly bring it safely to berth ashore each evening and securely moor it.
A great success to our watery gathering was the daily food schedule. Each day was assigned to one couple that cranked out breakfast, snacks and dinner. It was, simply put, haute cuisine and damned yummy! Plus easy; work one day, spend the rest of the trip being fed amazing grub!

Our time on Lake Koocanusa was spent in the upper reaches at Rock Cliff Islands, where we spent two beautiful days and nights. We then cruised back south to a location up the Elk River arm, where we watched osprey display their incredible fishing skills and some water skiers display their beginning skills.
Our final night was spent back near Gold Bay, the home of Sunshine Houseboats, which is adhering to strict COVID-19 regulations while still operating at near peak levels.
It was a different ‘road trip’ for us but one that was hugely memorable. Thanks to Sunshine and to our awesome crew/friends!
