Kevin Higgins named Area C Volunteer of the Year

Kevin Higgins has been officially recognized as the 2019 Electoral Area C Volunteer of the Year.

“Since moving to Area C from Ontario 13 years ago, Kevin has made an incredible impact in his community, across the East Kootenay and beyond,” said Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Electoral Area C Director and Board Chair Rob Gay.

Recognizing the fire hazard and potential for wildfire in his rural community, Higgins visited all of his neighbours within a five-kilometre radius introducing himself, gathering contact information and creating a list of available firefighting equipment, along with personal information that may be critical in emergencies.

This created a channel that has become a vital connection and source of communication for his neighbourhood.

“Beyond just having a list and sharing information, Kevin and his wife Bev also host an annual social gathering so that the neighbours can get together in person, which has really helped strengthen the sense of community in his area,” added Gay.

Following a personal journey with prostate cancer, Higgins established an East Kootenay chapter of Prostate Cancer Canada. Has served on both the B.C. and national boards and has dedicated countless hours to supporting individuals and their families facing surgical and medical treatment options. In addition, he is the Building Manager for Cranbrook Community Theatre and has volunteered for Emergency Support Services, the BC Seniors Games and Gran Fondo.

Director Gay formally recognized Higgins at a volunteer celebration in connection with the Area C Town Hall Meeting in late June. Attendees to the Town Hall Meeting heard presentations on the Five-Year Financial Plan, Solid Waste Management Plan Review and FireSmart basics.
