Kootenay ICE holding pre-season tilt at the Eddie

The Kootenay ICE, in collaboration with the Western Hockey League, announced its 2018 pre-season schedule on Wednesday and the only local rink to see action will be Invermereā€™s Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena.

The ICE will compete in seven pre-season games, including aĀ match upĀ against their division rivals the Calgary Hitmen at Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena on September 14. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.

“We are excited to host the Kootenay ICE in the heart of the Kootenays and on the shores of Lake Windermere – right in the core of Invermere, at the Eddie Mountain Arena,” explained Gerry Taft, Mayor of Invermere.

Taft added, “Our community is full of hockey fans, many who passionately cheer for our local teams, including the Kootenay ICE. It’s exciting to have our community showcased and be part of the pre-season WHL schedule.”

This wonā€™t be the first time the ICEĀ hasĀ made an appearance in Invermere in 2018. In January, the ICE, in partnership with the Columbia Valley Rockies, held a hockey festival on Lake Windermere.

The ICE also formed a partnership with the Rockies during the summer of 2017, ensuring fans of both teams had the opportunity to watch great hockey at a discounted price.

ā€œIt is a terrific opportunity for the youth of the Columbia Valley to witness and aspire to play for the WHL,ā€ said Brett Holt, President of the Columbia Valley Rockies (pictured right), when speaking about the pre-season game. ā€œIt will be a wonderful opportunity for our Junior B team and minor hockey to be part of this experience and I know they will be looking forward to watching theirĀ favouriteĀ players.ā€

The pre-season begins August 31 for the ICE with a tilt against Calgary at the Enmax Centrium in Red Deer, and then they take on Edmonton Oil Kings Sept. 1 at the same venue.

Sept. 6-8 the ICE head to Kennewick, Washington for games against the Tri-City Americans, Seattle Thunderbirds and Portland Winterhawks.

On Sept. 14 the ICE are in Invermere before heading to Calgary Sept. 15 for another match-up against the Hitmen at the Saddledome before the start of the regular season.

The ICE would like to thank Invermere and the Columbia Valley Rockies for their encouragement and support making this 2018 WHL pre-season game possible.

More details regarding the game will be released closer to September 14.
