Kootenay Pass re-opened after avalanche work

UPDATE: January 9 – Highway 3 through Kootenay Pass is once again open for passage following two days of avalanche safety work.

Avalanche deposit removal work is keeping Highway 3 closed in Kootenay Pass, stretching into a second full day.

DriveBC reports the highway is still closed between the west and east avalanche gates on the highway, west of Creston.

An alternative route between Creston and Nelson is available via Highway 3A and Kootenay Lake Ferry, with an estimated travel time of 2.5 hours.

However, DriveBC reports the ferry service is currently operating more than 90 minutes behind schedule, with delays of about two hours (each direction).

Another update is anticipated on DriveBC this evening.
