Local aims to raise funds for school district meal programs

A local man intends to climb a figurative Mount Everest this June with the aim of raising funds for School District No. 5 and School District No. 6 meal programs.

The programs provide breakfast and lunch to any child whose family cannot afford them consistently.

“The idea behind these programs is to help children learn rather than worry about hunger,” noted Cranbrook resident Michael Meinig, who says he will attempt to run/hike up the elevation of Mount Everest (8,848m or 29,029 ft.) in one day, his 55th birthday.

“This is comparable to hiking up Fisher Peak (pictured right) from sea level three times,” he pointed out. The estimated time to accomplish this feat will be 18 hours.

“We all know that we can’t learn if our basic needs aren’t being met.  If children are hungry, it is more difficult for them to focus and learn at school. Our schools provide breakfast and/or lunch to any child that needs it. All children are welcome so that no one feels singled out if their family cannot afford a proper meal.  These programs also teach children how to prepare healthy meals and provide opportunity for children to build relationships with others,” said Meinig, the Payroll & Benefits Coordinator with School District No. 5 (Southeast Kootenay).
