Local KIJHL squads launch cup bids tonight

The Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) playoffs get underway this evening (Feb. 28), with all three East Kootenay teams ready for action.

The Kimberley Dynamiters, thanks to once again being the cream of the KIJHL regular season crop, play host to the Creston Valley Thunder Cats at the Civic Centre (game time 7 p.m.) and the Fernie Ghostriders welcome the Columbia Valley Rockies to Memorial Arena (7:30 p.m.).

The clubs have at it again on Saturday, Feb. 29 – same game time, same rinks.

The Nitros finished the 49 game regular season with a league best 40 wins, six losses and three overtime losses.

Thanks to a 4-2 win at home in the final game of the season, the Dynamiters (83 points) moved one point ahead of the Revelstoke Grizzlies to win the regular season championship and The President Cup.

The Ghostriders posted a 22 wins, 11 losses, two ties and three overtime losses record, good for 71 points and second in the Eddie Mountain Division behind Kimberley, as well as second overall in the Kootenay Conference.

The Rockies outlasted Creston Valley in the race to the finish, concluding the regular season with a 22 wins, 19 losses, two ties and six overtime losses record and 52 points – one point ahead of the fourth place Cats (22-20-1-6).
