Kootenay-Columbia Member of Parliament Rob Morrison May 14 announced he is backing Durham MP Erin O’Toole to be the new leader of the Conservative Party of Canada (CPC).

“The current Liberal government has continuously eroded at our democratic institutions and continues to ignore the voice of Canadians. It is time for change and we need a government that represents the people and continues the effort to preserve our democracy and way of life,” Morrison said in a press statement.

“The next federal election will be one of the most important in our country’s history and I believe that a Conservative government will pave the best path forward.”

The 47-year-old O’Toole was first elected to office in 2012, after serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force as a commissioned officer (second lieutenant) in the Canadian Forces Air Command and later as a lawyer in Toronto.

“My father served in the Royal Canadian Air Force, which provided me with wide-ranging exposure of the Canadian landscape at an early age; fostering a decision that expanded into a 35-year career serving Canadians. I have a deep appreciation for Erin O’Toole’s service within the Royal Canadian Air Force and believe that he has the vision, experience and strength to lead our Party, win the next election and begin the important work of rebuilding a better Canada,” MP Morrison said.

“I am proud to announce my support for Erin O’Toole as the next leader of the Conservative Party.”

O’Toole, who holds honours degrees in history and political science, along with a law degree, is the current Official Opposition Critic for Foreign Affairs.

In 2017 he ran for CPC leadership in the bid to replace outgoing Prime Minister Stephen Harper, finishing third.

The election to replace outgoing leader Andrew Scheer will be held by postal ballot in August.
