Mainroad East Kootenay Ltd. Is alerting residents about a weather event anticipated to impact the East Kootenay over the next 24-48 hours.

Mainroad’s meteorological service is predicting varying precipitation including rain and mixed rain/ snow, in most areas in the East Kootenay. The mixed precipitation is expected to start near the USA border on Monday evening, and move towards the north and east overnight and through Tuesday (Nov. 19).

Most of the precipitation is expected to fall as rain showers, especially at lower elevations, and at the Yahk-Moyie area. This may change to mixed showers/ flurries overnight if temperatures fall sufficiently.

“At higher elevations, we are expecting snow, with accumulations nearing 10cm possible in higher elevation areas like Panorama Resort,” Mainroad noted. “At this time, we expect the weather event to last until roughly Wednesday afternoon.

“Similar to the mixed weather event that we encountered over the weekend, we urge motorists to be mindful that ice mitigation measures can be less effective in rain conditions, and to exercise an appropriate level of caution while driving. This is especially true when driving over bridge decks, through shady areas, and when exiting the highway onto a side road.”

Mainroad said it will be applying anti-icing chemicals and/or winter abrasive and performing snow removal operations where necessary, which will continue on all highways until the event passes and roadways are returned to the acceptable standard.
