MLA says NDP “hub” model will pose challenges for families

Kootenay East MLA Tom Shypitka spoke in the Legislature Nov. 15 about the NDP’s new “hub” model for autism funding and how it will negatively impact families across the province.

Shypitka suggested that in the past, we have seen that a ‘one size fits all’ approach rarely works, especially for families living in remote areas.

By creating this hub model, the NDP is removing the flexibility parents desperately need in rural areas such as Kootenay East, he said.

Shypitka discussed the harmful impact this change will have not only on children but also parents who have spent years building the right team for their child.

“Parents and children that have fostered strong relationships with their providers are terrified that changes to this new model will impede the growth they are seeing today, and threaten their children’s future.”
