Kootenay-Columbia MP Rob Morrison, Deputy Shadow Minister for Public Safety, June 24 addressed the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security, including Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Bill Blair and RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki, on recent discussions around the RCMP and racism in Canada.

“For over 30 years I was fortunate to have worked across Canada and internationally as a former member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. It was an honour to have worked with thousands of regular members, civilian members, public service support staff along with municipal and provincial policing agencies. The RCMP is a professional organization with outstanding employees. I am proud of my service and confident in the RCMP’s policing in Canada. I want to recognize the members of the RCMP who live in our communities, whose children grow up in our communities, who coach high-school sports and volunteer for events. I thank them for their service to Canadians, especially in tough times,” Morrison stated.

The MP noted he believes RCMP officers are currently not getting the support they need from “senior management” and recommended government re-establish the Commanding Officers’ Cultural Diversity Advisory Committee, which he once chaired, that was eliminated.

Neither Minister Blair nor Commissioner Lucki were able to provide answers as to why that committee was originally scrapped.

Re-establishing the Commanding Officers’ committee would create localized accountability, Morrison noted.
