New 150 ha blaze in Sage Creek
Lightning ignited six new wildfires in the East Kootenay yesterday/last night, including one that has quickly spread to 150 ha east of the Flathead Valley (about 14 km north of the Montana border).
BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) reports a new lightning-caused fire from last night in Sage Creek, about six km east of the Flathead River Valley, about 10 km from the Alberta border, that is already at 150 hectares.
There is a .06 ha fire in the Fisher Creek drainage overlooking the Palliser River Valley, south of The Royal Group range.
A .01 fire is on record along Wolverine FSR and there is a .01 fire in Marion Creek, both east of Harrogate.
Also sparked last night is a now .02 ha fire in Hobo Creek (called Hobo Creek 2).
And lightning ignited a .01 ha fire in Canuck Creek on the B.C./Montana border, about seven km east of Kingsgate.
The Whitetail Creek fire, east of Spillimacheen, now eight days old, has reached 300 ha in scale.
BCWS reports the fire 35% guarded and 15% contained.
“This fire is classified as out of control. This wildfire does not pose a threat to the Radium Hot Springs or other local communities at this time,” BCWS stated.
“Ground crews and heavy equipment are on site today along with aviation support. Crews are working to continue to build guard to limit growth. Hand ignition operations will take place to reinforce the guard where appropriate.”
The Hog Ranch fire northeast of Parson remains active and listed at 43.6 ha
A lightning-caused fire in Akenside Creek, located July 31 south of the Frances Creek watershed (west of Edgewater), is now at 80 ha.
A lightning-caused fire in the Cross River area, discovered August 1, is noted by BCWS as being one ha in size.
