RDEK Board Highlights

The following is a break down of what occurred during the Sept. 2 Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) board of directors’ meeting.

idlewild-workIdlewild Park Project receives funding

The board approved a $500,000 grant from the Community Works Fund for the Idlewild Park Washroom and Pier Project. The project, which is being undertaken by the City of Cranbrook, will include the construction of two disability accessible washrooms and three piers.

Windermere Water Options Report accepted

RDEK wallThe board accepted the 2016 Windermere Water System Improvement Options Report. The report updates a previous document that was prepared in December 2013. Since then, the RDEK has constructed a reservoir and has further explored groundwater; Parr Utilities has increased its rates; and construction cost estimates have changed, so an update was required. Electoral Area F Director Wendy Booth and RDEK staff met with the community on August 20 and 23. Feedback from these meetings and a request for direction is expected to be brought forward to the RDEK board at its October meeting.

Support for Highway 3 Branding Project

A letter will be sent to the Highway 3 Mayors’ and Chairs’ Coalition Subcommittee indicating support for its application to the Southern Interior Development Initiative Trust for a grant of up to $55,000 for the development of a rebranding and promotion strategy.

Tipping Fee Schedule changed to waive fees for clean up on public lands in Central Subregion


Central Subregion landfillThe board adopted an amendment to its Central Subregion Tipping Fee Schedule to waive tipping fees for construction/demolition waste originating from the clean up of public lands. Similar amendments for the Elk Valley and Columbia Valley Tipping Fee Schedules are expected to be brought to the Board for consideration in October.

Grant approved for STARS

STARS (Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service) will receive an $830 grant from the General Administration Service. The funding comes after the City of Fernie challenged the RDEK and Districts of Elkford and Sparwood to match its $830 donation.

Letter to be sent regarding Electoral Reform

Letters will be sent to the Prime Minister, MP Wayne Stetski and the Special Committee on Electoral Reform requesting that a referendum be held prior to implementation of any proposed changes to the current first-past-the-post voting system for federal elections.

WFF 1Special Event Licence approved for Scarecrow Festival


The board approved the Special Event Licence and granted an exemption from the Noise Control Bylaw from 10 a.m.—4 p.m. on September 18 for the Windermere Community Association’s annual Fall Fair and Scarecrow Festival.

Discretionary Grants-In-Aid (DGIA)

CR34The Wasa Recreation Society will receive $920 from the Electoral Area E DGIA account to cover the cost for eight of its members to take the Level 1 BC Food Safe course.

The Pine Ridge Roping Club will receive $1,200 ($200 from each of the six Electoral Area DGIA accounts) for a PA announcing system at Wycliffe Exhibition Grounds.
