RDEK Board Highlights

The following is a synopsis of what occurred during the Dec. 1 Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) board of directors’ meeting.

2018 Priority Projects Approved

The board approved the 2018 Priority Projects. The complete list is available on the RDEK’s website under the ‘About Us’ tab and includes 2018 milestones for both currently underway projects and those expected to be undertaken in the coming year. Link to 2018 Priority Projects Chart

2018/2019 CBT Community Initiatives and Affected Areas Program Call for Proposals Opens

The RDEK will continue to administer the Community Initiatives and Affected Areas Programs on behalf of Columbia Basin Trust. There is an earlier deadline this year. The call for proposals is now underway and the deadline for applications to be submitted is January 22, 2018. Application to be Submitted for 2018 WildSafe BC Community Coordinator


An application will be submitted to the 2018 WildSafe BC Program to provide a Community Coordinator in Electoral Areas F and G. In addition, the board approved a contribution of $2,300 from the Electoral Area F DGIA and $700 from the Electoral Area G DGIA accounts for the local program.

Jaffray Area OCP Does Not Proceed

After considering the results of the public hearing held on November 22, the board voted not to proceed with third reading and adoption of the Jaffray Area Official Community Plan (OCP) and the amended South Country Zoning Bylaw. The OCP and zoning bylaw would have updated the land use policies and development regulations for the area, but the board determined that there was insufficient support to proceed with the new bylaws. The Jaffray area remains covered by the zoning regulations and land use policies contained in Bylaw No. 1414, which was adopted in 1999.

RDEK Shows Interest in Partnering with ?akisq’nuk First Nation on Recreation Facility Project


The RDEK will send a letter to the ?akisq’nuk First Nation expressing interest in partnering with them on their recreation facility project, subject to financial plan discussions in February. The board will also request that Directors Gerry Taft (District of Invermere Mayor) and Clara Reinhardt (Village of Radium Hot Springs Mayor) participate on the design committee in an advisory capacity. The Recreation and Sports Centre will be located south of the Band Office on the east side of Highway 93/95 and the RDEK has been asked to contribute $400,000 of the $4.05M construction cost.

Grant Application for Westside Legacy Trail

The RDEK will partner with the Columbia Valley Greenways Trail Alliance on a $500,000 grant application to the BC Rural Dividend Program for construction of the Westside Legacy Trail. To date, the Alliance has raised 80% of its goal to construct the trail.

Moyie & Area OCP Plan Advisory Group Appointment

Joan Bray has been appointed to the Moyie & Area Official Community Plan Advisory Group. The Advisory Group consists of seven members of the public who provide feedback to RDEK staff and the Area Director and act as a liaison with the community throughout the development of the Moyie & Area Official Community Plan.

Panorama Special Event Licence Granted

The board approved a special event licence for Panorama Mountain Resort for its New Year’s Eve Fireworks Show on December 31.

Discretionary Grants-in-Aid (DGIA)

The Fernie Alpine Ski Team will receive $1,000 from the Electoral Area A Discretionary Grant in Aid account for Fernie Alpine Resort’s New Year’s Eve Fireworks Display.

Jaffray Elementary Secondary School will receive $1,000 from the Electoral Area B DGIA account to help o set the costs associated with the Junior Girls Volleyball team to travel to Surrey to compete in the Provincials.

Summit Community Services Society will receive $1,300 from the Electoral Area C DGIA account and $1,000 from the Electoral Area E DGIA account for the Police-Based Victim Services Program.

The Wasa & District Lions Club will receive $600 from the Electoral Area E DGIA account for the Tri-Village Kids Club Christmas Party.

Wildsight Invermere Branch will receive $2,000 from the Electoral Area F DGIA account and $500 from the Electoral Area G DGIA account for the Columbia Valley Radon Action and Awareness initiative.

The Edgewater Recreation Society will receive $1,500 from the Electoral Area G DGIA account for a Safety Barrier at Frank’s Rink.
