Every September in School District No. 5 (SD5) Southeast Kootenay, as some students prepare to attend a new school, there are also some administrators – principals and vice-principals— preparing to do the same thing.

This school year sees a record number of administrators welcomed into new schools in the district.

Aside from retirements, there are two main reasons why an administrator may change schools. An administrator may request, and be granted, a move for personal reasons, or the Board of Education may assign a new school to an administrator for professional reasons. The maximum length of time an administrator generally remains at one school is five years.

While some students –and parents—may feel sad to see a favourite administrator leave their school, these moves are beneficial to students and to the entire school system, says SD5 Board Chair Frank Lento.

“Switching things up encourages professional growth by providing the opportunity for an administrator to become familiar with different grade configurations, school and parent community cultures and staff expertise,” says Lento. “It’s also good for our students and staff to have a ‘fresh set of eyes’ come into the building and introduce new solutions to old challenges.”

According to Lento, the district ensures that administrators with less experience are paired with “seasoned” administrators as part of the district’s succession planning. Lento says this strategy ensures that SD5 will have qualified, professional leadership at each and every school in the district.
