Recycling program proving important for BC SCPA

The BC SPCA East Kootenay branch’s recycling program has helped raised over $37,000 so far in 2020.

“This incredible program is even more meaningful and important this year as our other fundraising streams have been put on hold through the pandemic. Please continue to drop those refundable containers off at the branch – Maybe we can make it to 50?” the local branch reported on social media.

In case you’re wondering (we were), this beverage receptacle recycling support from Cranbrook and area residents is not entirely indicative of people consuming more alcohol.

A Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction poll just released reports 25% of Canadians (aged 35-54) are drinking more while at home due to COVID-19 pandemic. The report on the poll cites a lack of regular schedule, stress and boredom as main factors.

However, 75% of Canadians are maintaining pre-pandemic drinking levels or are consuming less due to fewer social engagements.
